Baby sleep schedule at 7 months: two naps, wake windows and bedtime

At 7 months your baby needs 12 to 15 hours of sleep a day, with night sleep now stretching to 10 to 12 hours and 2 to 3 naps covering the rest. Wake windows sit at 2.5 to 3 hours. The range on the naps isn't vagueness — it's the transition, still in progress.

Most 7-month-olds are somewhere between three naps and two. On some days the late-afternoon nap still happens and bedtime lands in the early evening anyway; on others it does not, and bedtime needs to move earlier. Planning for both versions of the day is more useful than deciding which one your baby is.

During the 3-to-2 transition the two remaining naps have to grow to carry the load, and they take a few weeks to do it. The most reliable structure is a mid-morning nap and an early-afternoon nap, with the afternoon one ending in time to leave a full wake window before bed. On days when the naps come out short, an earlier bedtime is the tool — the night absorbs what the day did not manage.

Sitting up unaided arrives for many babies this month, and a lot of them practice it in the crib at 2 am. It's a phase, not defiance. Give plenty of daytime floor practice so the skill gets boring, lower the crib mattress if you have not already, and keep night responses short and dull. First teeth also often appear now; expect a day or two of grumpiness, not two weeks of ruined nights.

A sample day

The sample below shows a 2-nap day at 7 months, with wake windows of 2.5 to 3 hours. Take it as an example rather than a rule: if your baby still needs a third nap on some days, shift everything earlier and let bedtime come forward.

A sample day to give you a rough idea — every baby is different. Adjust the times to your child's sleep cues, and talk to your pediatrician about anything that worries you.
